Food Safety Legislation Progresses Slowly

The first steps on real food safety reforms were the subject of a House hearing June 3 in the Energy and Commerce Committee's Subcommittee on Health. The subcommittee unveiled the Food Safety Enhancement Act of 2009, a synthesis of several different bills that had been introduced earlier this session.

One-third of people sampled in a 2007 Produce Marketing Association Survey (30%) say they are more likely to buy fruits and vegetables that are labeled as organically-grown. The major reasons for this organic preference are the perception that it is healthier produce (37%) and the view that there are fewer chemicals (29%). Among the majority who are not more likely to buy organic (63%), the main reasons are perceived higher costs (35%), and the view that there is really no difference between organic and traditionally-grown produce (10%).
